By John Sutton

This issue completes two years of our quarterly magazine, with which we try to keep you informed about what is going on in your Borough and Rural District.

Our last meeting saw the election of Miss Joan Howe to the Chair of the Society, and we wish her every success in this post.  Her predecessor, Jim Worgan, has retired gracefully to the Vice Chairman’s position after an excellent tour of duty at the helm. Thank you Jim for all your hard work.

As hinted in our last issue, the interest from the schools in our attempts to interest year eight students in the running of their town has declined sharply over the last two years, so we have decided reluctantly to abandon this project for the time being.  An alternative proposal is in the early planning stages.  More will be revealed later in the year.

Our hardworking Minute Secretary Philip has been seeking a successor, but understandably no one is prepared to follow on the very high standard he has set. Luckily a compromise has been reached whereby notes will be taken on a rota and Philip will continue to write them up and produce the minutes.

Don’t forget, we are always on the look out for new members. If you are concerned about the future of your local environment, do think about joining us.  From September we shall be back to our meeting times on the second Friday afternoon of each month.  2.00 pm in the Orme Centre.

The Society was founded in 1968 to help preserve what was good in our Borough.

Its first success was saving the façade of the Castle Hotel.  Since then it has been instrumental in guiding the development of the Lyme Valley, fighting the proposal to build an East-West road which would have destroyed a large area, helped in the Saving of Maer and Hanchurch Hills and brought about the restoration to her proper place of the Queen Victoria statue amongst many other projects.

Membership is open to all and costs £7.

 This will entitle you to:-

Attend any or all of our monthly meetings.

Receive a copy of the minutes of all these meetings.

Receive a copy of our quarterly magazine.

For an extra £1 you can buy an attractive enamel badge bearing the Society’s logo. Wear it with pride to let everyone know that you are concerned about the wellbeing of your town and rural area.

The time for the next Newsletter has come round very quickly, and just as life is beginning to start again in the garden, so activities are beginning again in the Society.  Not too much to report yet, but work is going on behind the scenes.

Sadly, we have again to report the death of a much loved and respected member of our Society.  Roger Wain unhappily died since our last issue, and a tribute to him will be found elsewhere in this magazine.

This issue has been held back slightly to allow us to give up-to-date details of change of officers after the AGM on 10th May. We thank those who have resigned from office for their hard work, and we extend our thanks to their successors for taking on their duties. The editors would like to express their thanks to all who have contributed to this issue.  Without you there would be no magazine.

We are always looking for new members.  If you are interested in the future of your town and rural area, come along to one of our meetings.  You may even be persuaded to join, (but there will be no pressure to do so if you think it is not for you.)  For the next three months we shall be meeting on Monday evenings to make it easier for those who work during the day.  See below:-

Meeting Times April May June and July 2010.

The Orme Centre, Orme Road, Room 6 on the second Monday of each month at 6.30pm

Meetings start promptly, and if contributing to the discussions gives you a dry throat, you may get a free (non-alcoholic) drink provided. How can you resist that?

As I indicated in the last magazine, by the time this one is published the Society will have a new Chairman. It is interesting to note the dictionary definition of a Chairman as “A person chosen to preside over a meeting”. I urge the Society to retain this title because the dictionary definition of a Chair is “A separate seat for one person usually having a back and 4 legs”. So far no one has sat on me.

The Society was founded in 1968 and it is interesting to note that of the current 60 or so members, 10 have forth years continuous membership to the present day, 9 of whom are founder members.

The Society became a founder member, in 2010, of Civic Voice a registered charity  formed in part to replace the Civic Trust which went into administration in 2009. We continue to go from strength to strength and it is hoped that by holding the May, June and July meetings at 6.30pm at the Orme Centre it will encourage new, younger members.

I will continue to represent the Society on the various outside committees I attend and I would like to express my appreciation to all officers and members for the excellent support they have given me during my time as chairman.

I leave you with these thoughts of G.K. Chesterton (1874 – 1936) from the Shakespeare Memorial

Lord Lilac thought it rather rotten

That Shakespeare should be quite forgotten

And therefore got on a Committee

With several chaps out of the city

Meetings, Membership

A group dedicated to protecting and improving the character of Newcastle-under-Lyme is hoping to attract new members by changing its meeting time.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Society will hold evening meetings in May, June and July to give a wider range of people the chance to attend. The group usually meets in the afternoon of the second Friday of each month.

The Civic Society was formed in 1968 and has around 60 members. The group acts as a pressure group to support developments that they believe will benefit the town and fight against those which may damage its appearance or character.

They are also responsible for the blue plaques commemorating the borough’s significant locations and residents, and worked with the council on the recent Civic Awards celebrating quality design in buildings and land development.

Chairman Jim Worgan said: “Meeting in the afternoon suited our retired members but meant younger working people could not attend. We hope to welcome many new people who are interested in the heritage and future of our historic town.”

The evening meetings will start at 6.30pm at the Orme Centre in Pooldam on May 10, June 14 and July 12.

For many years we have met during the afternoon of the second Friday of each month. Whilst this arrangement has suited our retired members, it has meant that younger working people could not attend.

As an experiment we are holding evening meetings for four months in the hope of  attracting new members.

These meetings will start at 6.30 pm at the Orme Centre, Pooldam on Mondays – 12th April, 10th May, 14th June and 12th July 2010.

T

he Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Society currently meet on the second Friday of each month except August in room 6 in the Orme Centre, Orme Road, Newcastle at 2.00 pm.

In April, May, June and July  2010 the monthly meeting will be held in the same venue but on the second Monday of the month at 7.00pm.  It is thought that this time may be more convenient for younger members and encourage them to attend.

Contributed by Vice Chairman John Russell

We were delighted to receive a copy of your spring newsletter and offer our congratulations on achieving your 40th anniversary.

It is our pleasure to respond to your request and contribute a few lines on the Leek Society for your next issue.

We cannot match your 40 years but at 32 are not that far behind. So what can we say about the Leek Society?. Firstly, our full name is the Leek and District Civic Society as we seek to monitor and be involved with developments not just in the Leek town area but also those in another 18 civil parishes. Our objectives are very much in line with what you do for Newcastle and the phrase “none of us is getting any younger” picked up from your Chairman’s message rings very true with our group. We too would like to attract more new, perhaps younger, members!

What then do we actually do and what have we achieved recently?

Firstly on a month by month basis, and probably, like yourselves, we aim to monitor, review, object if necessary to any developments proposed for our area. It is a great help with this that the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has a “Conservation Area Liaison Advisory Panel” on which we have a valued seat. This panel meets to consider proposals affecting conservation areas throughout the Council’s domain. Although only advisory (final decisions being taken by the Planning Committee) membership does give us an opportunity to comment at an early stage, and of course feedback  details to our members at large.

Every year we run an ‘Awards Scheme for the Enhancement of the Environment’. Here we invite entries from within our area for developments which have taken place in the previous calendar year to be considered for an award. We are trying to encourage developments to be generally enhancing to the street scene and for this reason entries for our competition must be visible to the general public. We say for example that a new front wall, porch etc would be an eligible entry but a rear conservatory, however praiseworthy, would not. Of course the full rules are more complicated than this simplistic overview, but we do like to keep things as simple as possible and to offer maximum encouragement for developers to enter the competition. Awards in the form of “Certificates of Merit” are given to all parties concerned with a scheme meeting our standard that includes the owner, architect and builder as we feel all concerned with a successful project should be recognised. We offer the project considered the best overall a brass plaque which can be mounted on the development.

We have long sought to make Leek a greener place and have tried to encourage tree planting within the town. Newcastle, incidentally, does well in this respect. Recently we have been instrumental in having a tree planted in Leek Market Place to recognise 800 years of the granting of a Market Charter. You and your members will be well aware of the difficulties (and expense) of such an apparently simple task. This planting builds on the success we had in arranging sponsorship for trees to be planted around a re-developed car park in Leek town centre. This was, until our intervention, going to be left without the softening/ enhancing effect trees have on most developments.

So without making this too long I think you can see that, although we are only your little brother, we both share similar aspirations for our area of interest.
