This issue of the Civic Society Newsletter completes our first year. We hope that you have found something of interest in each issue as we try to keep you informed of what is going on in your Borough. No doubt we could do better if more of you made the effort to contact us, either by letter or e-mail, with your own concerns and observations. Sadly we have lost two more of our long standing members since our last issue. Short tributes to them will be found elsewhere in this Newsletter. Although the main purpose of this Newsletter is to keep the citizens of Newcastle aware of what is going on around them and what is planned for the future, a number of people have indicated to me that a little light relief would make it more readable. I have therefore in this issue used a few items of less serious material as fillers. In this I have drawn mainly on extracts from an excellent book by Alf Tunstall on the history of the Newcastle Police Force. A few gems from the past to help us appreciate today. Following on the Police theme, I am delighted to have an article by Supt. Andy Franks on policing Newcastle today, which addresses matters that concern us all. Finally, my sincere thanks to my co-editors Philip and Angela and to all who have contributed material for this issue. Remember, articles are welcome from everyone, you do not need to be a member to contribute to this Newsletter. The views expressed in any article in this newsletter are those of the individual author and do not necessarily represent the views or policy of the Newcastle Civic Society.
