It is with great sadness the we have to report the death of our Honorary Treasurer, Iris Poole, on 9th February 2009 after an illness borne with great courage and fortitude.

Iris spent all her life in Newcastle-under-Lyme, a town which was very dear to her and she will be missed by all who knew her.

A long standing member of the Civic Society, she was passionate about retaining the heritage of the Borough.  Small in statue, nevertheless she was resolute in spirit and determination.  A lifelong churchgoer, Iris was a remarkable lady who was liked and respected by all.

She was Treasurer of this Society for many years and constantly reminded members that it was important to rein in on spending and maintain a healthy bank balance.  Iris carried on her duties as Treasurer throughout her illness, only handing over the books to the Chairman in November 2008.  Her experience of the way the Society worked was invaluable and will be greatly missed.

We extend our sympathy and condolences to her husband Maurice, son Alan and his family.
